Installing infant seat into middle seat of 2'nd row

Hi all,

New dad here (well, new as in when the baby arrives, which is due in 10 days). I've tightly and securely installed our Chico infant seat behind the passenger front seat, but would like to be able to put it in the middle instead (the passenger seat loses a decent amount of leg room with the car seat behind it, and I read that the middle seat is the safest). As the middle seat has a loose buckle, I can't get it tight enough to remotely be safe without the buckle having to rest on top of the belt path for the car seat base (which would prevent the seat from inserting into the base). Are there any other options here? The car seat comes with LATCH as well, but obviously there is nothing to hook those up to on a stock '00 Durango. Can the dealer install them for the middle seat?

What have you other parents done to get an infant seat installed on the middle seat of the 2'nd row?

I looked further, and I can't seem to find any lower LATCH anchors on the left or right side 2'nd row seats. I see one single LATCH anchor right behind the seats on the floor, I'd assume for front facing carseats, but nothing in between the seat bottom and back for rear facing seats (and for the lower LATCHes of front facing seats).

Look at babies-r-us. I think it is called mighty tite or something like that. Just type it in google and it should come up. You put the seat belt strap through it and crank it down. It works awesome, we bought them for our car seats.

Thanks, this would definitely solve the problem of the seatbelt in the middle not being a locking one, however the main problem is that the loose buckle is too long. Even with the mighty tite, once the base was installed properly the loose buckle would end up getting in the way of the actual car seat that clips into the base because it's being pulled so tight.

This is the system we have:

In one of the images, you can see that the belt path goes up and over part of the base. That part is where the loose buckle ends up going on top of when the tension is what it needs to be.

The stealership said that the LATCH parts for the middle seat can be ordered, but they are back ordered and there is no expected arrival date. Full installation would be just over $300. Sheesh. Just for two or three metal loops.

Whenever you do get it where you think it is ok. Take a trip down to the state police or local pd. They will be more than willing to check it for you and make sure everything is ok and help you out if its not before the little one comes. Congrats on the baby to by the way. Kids are the best thing that will happen to ya.Lot of fun. Except you lose all your money for doing any mods on the vehicle.

Haha, that's what I'm told. I'll be lucky to do the bi-monthly (every two months) brew at $30 per batch (I'm a homebrewer). In any case, my D doesn't have any tether or LATCH spots in the middle, and the loose buckle there is just too long. It's OK though, my wife prefers it on the side for her ease of access. Now she doesn't need to climb up on the runner to snap the car seat into the base. I guess it's not so bad having it installed on the passenger side of the vehicle safety-wise...at least it's not a compact car! BTW, I got the seat so tight that it takes me a heck of a lot of effort to move it even a few millimeters. I doubt local law enforcement could get it better (which, by the way, here in downtown San Diego only the CHP does it and only two days of each month. Local P.D. or F.D don't).

Now I just need the baby to test it out...

Thanks, I actually just bottled a pale ale and an oatmeal stout this last weekend. Brewed it about a month ago, ended up getting 5 gallons of the oatmeal stout for bottling and 4.5 of the pale ale. Both are award winning in the homebrewing world and are soooo good. I don't drink often, but every week or so when I want one, it's nice to have something really good (I don't like anything from the store).
