I am hoping any/all of you with previous expierience with either or both of these problems will help me feel better and become more informed...I have a 2003 Ram 1500 4x4. I noticed the other day while greasing my u-joints that my passenger side rear axle seal is leaking, there is moisture on the dust shield and a little bit of diff. fluid from time to time is dripping on to the inside of the rim. Also, while under the truck I notice that the pinion seal is leaking (oil has slung all over the gas tank). I would hope that all I need to do is get the pinion and right rear axle seal replaced and diff fluid ect. My big worry is...are these leaks normaly just simple leaks or have you found that the bearings (pinion and or wheel) have failed do to or the cause of these leaks??? I am like most people right now (I'm broke as a joke!!!) so I do not want to worry about having to spend more money if I don't have to!!

Do I need to buy a new pinion nut or am I better off having my mechanic use the old one? Should I replace both of the seals or just the one that is leaking? Are there any other surprises that I should expect? Is there anything tht I should ask my mechanic or make sure that he knows to do before I have him start? I am sorry for such a long post Im just a fool when it comes to some things automotive, an the rear axle is one of them!! Thank you in advance for any and all advise and tips.

-Mike

you should have it professionally done since the rear end has to be taken apart to set the me pinion seal

PLEASE NOTE: There are 2 different torque specs for the pinion nut, one for useing a new crush sleeve & one for reusing the old crush sleeve. There is also something new that eliminates the crush sleeve & all the issues from people not following the proper torque specs.

I do not know what they are. I do know that MANY, MANY people have had catasrophic failures soon after someone else was in there, for changing gears/ratios/pinion bearings/seal/ect. Make sure your mechanic knows this & knows what the specs for each are.

I would also disconnect the axle vent tube & hit it with some compressed air, to blow out any mud/dirt/debris/insects, that may have plugged it up, which may have caused the seal failures.

You'll want to have the leaking seals replaced at a minimum. Pinion seal replacement isn't too costly (cost me about $300 but half of that was servicing the rear differential while I had it in so $150 for pinion seal), but if they don't torque the pinion nut to the proper torque, there can be pinion bearing damage down the road (ask me how I know.......). Not sure about the axle seals - it's probably about the same cost. :dunno:

Axle seals should be no problem for pretty much anybody that works in the field. I would change both seals. I changed both sides on my truck for $1.90 plus a couple bucks in shipping and my time. I would be more concerned with that pinion seal considering it is a Dodge. Although it should be a simple job. It could lead to some money. Specially if you have the Trac Loc. But you won't know until somebody competent looks at it. So for the pinion seal.Make sure the guys got some references and has done lots of work on the Dodge rear end. When i had my gears done. The pinion seal ended up being a very slight leaker. My gear guy had the pinion seal changed in 45 minutes. He reused the pinion nut and used loctite upon reassembly. Not a bad idea to get a new nut though. Specially if yours is the original.

Good Luck
